Breast Reduction: Less Size, Less Strain

Reduction Mammoplasty · Breast Reduction Jakarta
by dr. Enrina Diah, Sp.BP-RE, KKF & dr. Grace Boaz, Sp.BP-RE

Breast reduction reduces excessively large, heavy breasts — removing excess tissue, fat, and skin, then reshaping to a higher, more proportionate position. Beyond appearance, it relieves physical symptoms such as back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Who Is It For?

NOTE

Excess tissue, fat, and skin are removed and the breast is reshaped. In larger reductions, the nipple-areola complex is moved to a higher position using a pedicle technique — a method that keeps the blood supply and nerves to the nipple intact as it is repositioned. The incision pattern (vertical “lollipop” or anchor) is matched to the degree of reduction needed.

AT A GLANCE

What to Expect

Technique
Tissue removal + reshaping + nipple-areola repositioning (pedicle technique in larger reductions).
Incision
Vertical (“lollipop” pattern) or anchor (inverted-T), matched to the degree of reduction.
Anesthesia
Usually sedation; for large-scale reductions, general anesthesia may be considered.
Hospital stay
Usually day surgery (home the same day); for large-scale reductions with a drain, a 1-night stay may be considered for observation.
Recovery
Return to light desk work after about 5–7 days; avoid heavy lifting for 3–4 weeks.
Result
Size is permanently reduced and the breast is lifted; long-lasting (shape is still affected by aging and weight).
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently Asked Questions

Does breast reduction relieve back pain?

In many cases, yes. By reducing breast weight, the load on the back, neck, and shoulders decreases, so pain often improves.

Yes, it can affect both — particularly in larger reductions, where the nipple-areola complex must be repositioned and some milk ducts and nipple nerves may be affected, either temporarily or permanently. This is discussed in detail during your consultation.

The incision pattern is designed to sit well under a bra or swimwear, and the lines fade over time.
