Upper Jaw Surgery (Le Fort I): Repositioning the Maxilla

Le Fort I Osteotomy · Maxilla
by dr. Enrina Diah, Sp.BP-RE, KKF

Upper jaw surgery (Le Fort I) repositions the upper jawbone (maxilla) to correct the bite and midface balance. The maxilla is precisely separated and moved to a planned position — advanced, impacted, or leveled — and fixed with titanium plates and screws through an incision inside the mouth.

INDICATIONS

What It Addresses

NOTE

Le Fort I is often part of a plan involving orthodontics, and may be combined with lower-jaw surgery (double jaw) when needed. It is carefully planned with 3D-CT, cephalometry, and dental planning so the bite and profile improve together.

Related: Double Jaw Surgery (when both jaws must move) · Paranasal Implant (when the midface only lacks projection, not position).

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Le Fort I fix a gummy smile?

Yes. When a gummy smile is caused by vertical excess of the upper jaw, Le Fort I can raise the maxilla so less gum shows when smiling.

No. The incision is made inside the mouth, so there is no scar on the facial skin.
